There are many devices that could be used in order to forge autographs and pass them as authentic items. One of these devices is the autopen -- a tool that can closely imitate ink signatures. For amateur collectors, autographs signed using an autopen may not look so different when compared to the originals. For veteran collectors and experts, however, there are certain characteristics that can help differentiate autopen autographs from the real ones.
Forgery is a serious issue that continues to affect the values and prices of autographs on sale. Some individuals who want to make money out of the autograph-signing business forge documents or create false documents and claim them as authentic autographs. Another technique used by some dealers of celebrity autographs is "preprinting." In this technique, genuine autographed pictures are photocopied on a piece of photo paper and sold as a "preprinted" item. But because these details are usually disclosed to a buyer, "preprinting" is not considered as forgery.
Determining value can be a tricky business since one has to scrutinize every signature for authenticity. One factor that can affect autograph values is the actual condition of the signed item. If signed documents or items are stained or torn, their autograph values diminish over time. Same goes with the quality of the writing material used in signing.
